Julia Rehme is an artist based in Leipzig. After 14 years of working as a tattoo artist, she has shifted her focus entirely to painting since 2025.

Artist Statement Painting begins where language ends. Julia approaches painting intuitively, allowing her subconscious to guide spontaneous expressions onto canvas and paper. Her abstract-expressive works emerge from sensitive explorations of incidental marks, fleeting gestures, and subtle impressions found in everyday environments. She is particularly captivated by unexpected marks and spontaneous scratches - discoveries in the accidental and unforeseen that intensely capture her attention.

Her process often begins with quick sketches, inspired by real-world observations. These initial ideas evolve spontaneously, drifting closer to or further from their original references. Working with both fluid paints and mixed media - including pencils, pastels, and dry materials - on unprimed surfaces, Julia captures immediacy and raw emotion.

Drawn to the imperfect, fragile, and process-oriented, Julia's work balances softness and intensity, tranquility and dynamism. Influenced by Abstract Expressionism and Art Informel, she explores the space between dissolution and emergence, creating compositions defined by delicate color fields, energetic gestures, and organic forms. Each painting reveals quiet complexities beneath apparent simplicity, inviting deeper contemplation.

Julia continually experiments at the intersection of chance and intention, chaos and harmony, transforming subtle observations into powerful visual narratives that celebrate the unpredictable beauty of the creative process.

Background Julia studied design at Hochschule Hannover (University of Applied Sciences and Arts), where her abstract, painterly style began to take form. She later translated this distinct artistic approach into tattooing, gaining international recognition in the tattoo scene. (VIEW TATTOO WORKS HERE.)

In Berlin, she founded a studio dedicated to Contemporary Tattooing—viewing tattooing as an extension of artistic expression rather than mere craftsmanship. Her studio became a creative hub attracting international artists committed to exploring innovative, artistic tattooing beyond traditional methods.

After intensive years in tattooing, Julia took a creative break, realizing her need for greater artistic freedom. Painting now allows her to express herself spontaneously and without the limitations of skin as a medium, further advancing her gestural, abstract style.

Since 2025, Julia has been fully committed to painting, driven by the same passion and dedication that characterized her earlier work.
